Hidden Gems: The Stonefort novels by James Hetley

This a new feature that will promote books I have read, and loved, but not reviewed :).
And, I am so happy that these books are available as e-books.  This is Urban Fantasy of the best kind. Intresting characters, intresting plot and a setting that you want more of.  I love the covers, they are eye catching, and fits the books. ( I liked the original covers too, but I would love to have print copies with these covers...) 

Two magical families live in the hardscrabble town of Stonefort, Maine: the shape shifting Morgans and the Haskell witches. But evil is coming to Stonefort. Friday Bargains: 0.99 books at Sony

The bargains I am excited about right now is at Sony. I haven't bought anything from Sony, just downloaded freebies, but I think that will change. ;).

Anyway, they have to ongoing campaigns right now.  The first one is  Fall in love with a series, which Amazon is price matching.  It is mostly romance, but I am excited, since several of the books are on my Wishlist.

Friday Bargains: A lot of Historical mystery

For me, autumn means I want to curl up on the coach and read mysteries. And, the publishers are appearantly reading my mind this week. 
Right now, the first three books in  Tasha Alexander's Lady Emily's series are discounted to 1.99 at Amazon. ( That price, in combination that Amazon didn't add Whispernet fees, was enough for me to snap up the first one.)

Joss Alexander's Tainted Innocence is discounted to 1.99 at Carina Press, until September ends.  This is another one I plan to buy. 

Still Life with Murder by P.B Ryan is free at both Amazon and Smashwords.  ( I have this one, I have started to read it several times, but I never finished it.)

Friday Bargains: Mostly Novellas and short stories

Kobo has very nice round up of novellas, and short stories here, priced between 0.99-2.99. I am tempted to buy some, but I probably wont since I am trying to purchase less e-books.

Amazon   offers 100 e-books for 3.99 this month.  The romance e-books sounds quite interesting, but  the one I really want is in Fantasy..  I might actually buy something from Amazon, instead of just downloading freebies.

Poisoned Pen press offers several of their books for free right now.  (If one of the books isn't free, price report it.)

And, since I am weak I signed up for Samhain's newsletter ( I love coupon codes). Speaking of Samhain, their current Book club selection is Blaze of Glory by Sheryl Nantus. Today is the last day.

On my To Check Out list: Indie authors, part two

This is the second post in my series of blogposts about books  On My To Check out list.  I also try to add why I haven't got them yet. 

First up is Burning Sky by Joseph Robert Lewis:

This book have been on my check out list ever since it was released. The blurb intrigued, me the cover was Ok ( it is much nicer now), I read the sample and enjoyed it. I still haven't bought it.

However, he offered a free novella recently, set in the same world which I downloaded.

If I like that one, I'll probably get this one :). Edit: Woot!  I just discovered that the author offers it for free from his homepage, so I downloaded it.

Harry Connelly's Twenty Palaces:

This is a prequel to Harry Connelly's Twenty Palace novels, which are available in print in all major bookstores. I have been curious about Harry Connelly's books, but I never got around to buy them.

Dragon's Bones by James Hetley:

Few things about Stonefort are exactly as they seem.

Stonefort, small fishing village and harbor and township and island, sits off the Maine coast, about as far Down East as you can get without passing through Canadian Customs. Only the Salt Hay Bridge connects it to the mainland and rest of the Boston States. If you held a vote, probably more than half of the residents would choose to blow up that bridge and all it implies.

In this latest installment in the Stonefort saga, Maine author James A. Hetley revisits the tough land when a logging camp becomes the center of illegal activity in this world and perhaps in another as well. Nurse and cop, both must face a special duty in the face of Dragon's Bones.

I love James Hetley's books, and the only thing that have stopped me from buying this one is the price: 2.99 for a 14 000 words long story. I'll probably buy it sooner or later, though.

Various bargains

I have a coupon code from Harlequin that I haven't posted before, and bunch of e-book deals.

This puts most of their e-books ( with the exception of Luna and Harlequin Teen) at a price range between 0.05-3 dollar.  However, you must buy the books one at a time.  Otherwise, Harlequin discounts the total price.    Which is still a nice discount, but not as good deal as if you buy the books one at a time.

Oh, and this code will be the only main exception to my decision to not buy e-books.  I have several authors that I intend to buy.

Let's first start with Katie Macalister's fun historical romps.  Right now, they are available for 0.99 each, which is a bargain.

 I loved Noble intentions. It made me giggle. It is a bit over the top, but sometimes you need over the top.

 I must admit, that I never finished reading this one.  The heroine annoyed me.   Maybe it was my mood.

The Trouble with Harry:

1. He is Plum’s new husband. Not normally a problem, but when you consider that Harry advertised for a wife, and Plum was set to marry his secretary, there was cause for a bit of confusion.

2. He has a title. Plum has spent the last twenty years hiding from the ton, and now Harry wants her to shine in society? Horrors!

3. He doesn’t know about her shocking secret. How is she going to explain about the dead husband who isn’t a husband…and who now seems to be alive again?

4. He’s fallen in love with her. And yet, the maddening man refuses to confide in her. For Plum knows the real trouble with Harry is that he’s stolen her heart.

I loved this one. A lot.  Like Noble Intentions, it was hilarious.

So for the indie bargains:
Indie phenomen Amanda Hocking offers Hollowland for free at Smashwords and Amazon ( most likely also free at BN).   I downloaded this one, primarily since I want to see what all the buzz is about.

Mindy Klasky have re-issued her paranormal romance backlist novel.  How to Not Make a Wish is the first book in the Wish series about a genie.  It is a funny paranormal romance that is available for 0.99 at Smashwords and Amazon.
She also offers the first book in her Jane Madison series, Girl's Guide to Witchcraft, for 0.99.  This is a paranormal chicklit.  I have it in paper somewhere, but I haven't re-read it in years. 
Eve Langlais has discounted The Geek Job to 0.99, also at Smashwords.  It is 2.99 at Amazon, and Allromance, which makes me suspect the price will go up soon.
Debra Webb have a lot of backlist available for 0.99 at  Smashwords.  
The one I plan to buy is Obession.

And for the Fantasy fans: A.A. Attanasio's Arthur Series is free at Kobo. Since the author have signed up for KDP Select, they will be gone very, very soon. So if you want it, pick it up.  ( I haven't read it, but I downloaded it since they sounded good).

Review: Delicate Freakn' Flower by Eve Langlais

The Review:

I noticed this one when it was released, but I never bought it, so when it was offered as a free read I downloaded it. And I am glad I did. I loved this book in so many ways. It was funny, filled with snark and snappy comebacks. I loved Naomi, Her snarkiness, her determination to keep her independence. She was scarred by the past, and her reasoning made sense. She knew exactly what she wanted- which was to not mate with a shifter. Thank you very much. Ethan and Jared are determined to show her she is wrong. And how they do it. They start a sensual feast. A long courtship, that lasts until they have convinced Nicole that she needs a shifter.

But now for the things I didn't like.  When it comes to the plot, the suspense subplot felt tacked on and unnecessary.  I didn't feel that it added anything to the story.   There were a few minor typos, but the thing that  annoyed me most was the formatting... I have no idea why, but the spacing was 1,5 lines Why? Since it gives an unprofessional impression. 

Will I get more books? Oh definitely.  I loved this book, and the major flaw is fixable. 

Resources: Webscription and Fifth Imperium

 This post was inspired by a comment I made on a blog. It will probably turn into a new feature.

I am broke right now, so I need webpages with cheap, well edited books.  There are two webpages that I always browse when I am on the outlook for Fantasy and Science Fiction: Webscription.net and Fifth Imperium.
Webscription is Baen's Ebookstore and it also includes Baen Free Library. The e-books are priced at 6-4 dollar, which means you save a lot of money buying a new release as e-book instead of Hardcover. 
When it comes to the Fifth Imperium I was a bit hesitant at first, but it is legit.  The Fifth Imperium hosts most of the CDs that came with Baen Hardcover a couple of years ago, which means you have access to even more free e-books.  It is a great way to discover new authors, or pick up books you have wanted to read but not pay hardcover prices for.

( Honestly, I wish other publishers followed Baen's lead.  DRM free, cheap e-books, and plenty of free e-books too!)

Smashwords deals

Smashwords July sale ends tomorrow at midnight, so I thought I would recommend some deals I have found at Smashwords.  Some of them are part of the sale, some of them aren't. All the books is priced at 0.99, or free.

If you like fantasy and Science Fiction, check out Lazette Gifford's books. They are part of the sale, and only 0.99 right now.
Karen Chance has three short stories up for free,  all of them features characters from her Cassie Palmers series.

 Scott Nicholson offers Burial to Follow for 0.99. This is a  novella, a bit quirky,  but a really good read. Since it isn't as dark as some of his other books, it  is a good place to start.

Jana Deleon offers Trouble in Mudbug, the first book in her Mudbug series for 0.99. This a funny book, with quirky characters. This is a great price, since the other books in the series cost 3.99. Alison Kent offers  both Playing Love's odds and Love in Bloom for 0.99.
Gemma Halliday beats them. She offers the deliciously snarky Hollywood Scandals for free. I read this on the plane home, and I recommend it.  ( A review is coming... as soon as I decide the themes for the rest of the year.)

Jill Myles offers her contemporary romance novel, Wicked Games, for free.

Bargain round up- the Historical Romance version

There is a number of US only deals listed at Dear Author. To minimize the overlap, I have decided to focus on the ones that is available internationally at Allromanceebooks.  It will be a mix of publisher deals, and bestselling authors going indie. The price level I have decided is 4.99.  Why? Mainly because above that it starts to stray into ordinary pricing.

Never a bride by Amelia Grey and The Mistress House by Leigh Michaels is available for free at ARe, Kobo, and Amazon. 

Kensington offers What a Gentleman wants by Caroline Linden for 3.99 and the sequels for 4.79 each.  I read What a Gentleman wants last week and I recommend it.
To tempt a Scotman by Victoria Dahl is available for 3.19, also from Kensington.
So, the selfpublished books.
Caroline Jewel offers 3 selfpublished books at ARe, as do Colleen Gleason.  Don't forget to check out Courtney Milan's Unlocked, also at ARe.

At Smashwords the annual July Summer/Winter Sale has just started. The sale lasts the whole month, so keep an eye on it.

To celebrate 4th july, Patricia Rice offers Paper Roses (Paper series) for 0.99 at Amazon. I am a bit bummed that it isn't available internationally. But it is coming. I hope.

My impressions:

This is shorter than Moira Rogers normally writes, and that shows.The story is well written, and made me forget the rest of the world. The characters are vibrant. The story is heartwrenching, and made me say aw several times. But, it isn’t perfect. In places it felt shallow, as if it was a category novel disguised as a short story. Still, I will buy the next tale in the series and hope that this story is revised and expanded in a couple of years.

My impressions:
I must admit, I am weak for romance novels were a strong woman meets a man with orphaned children. Toss in steampunk and magic, and I has too read it. This was one of the first ARCs I requested from NetGalley. And I am glad I did. Cindy Spencer Pape have created a fascinating world, that houses magic, tech and monsters. I liked that the world was nuanced, and that she didn’t hesitate to show the uglier sides. The uglier sides have affected the characters, and that also affect the plot. The steampunk elements were light, but important to the plot.
I fell in love with the characters. All of them, even Edwin Berry. The children were depicted as children and not mini adults. I liked the way Caroline handled them. But I especially liked the growing romance between Merrick and Caroline. Both of them are aware of their attraction, but determined to fight it.
The plot was fast paced, and sucked me in. The combination of plot, world and characters was good enough to make me ignore some of the less than subtle hints. But, it is a well written story, in a fascinating world. I am looking forward to the next book in the Series.

Why was it in my TBR? I had heard about him, and when they offered it for free in November or so, I took the chance.

My impressions:
I am the first to admit that I am a bit wary about indie publishing.I had heard good things about this author, so I decided to take the chance. And I am glad I did. The book is well written and set in an engaging world. The plot are filled with unexpected twists. Gradually, secrets are revealed. I liked the interaction between characters. I was sucked into the plot, looked up and found that I had read 60 pages.
This was book 2 and sometimes I regretted I hadn’t read book One first, but I didn’t feel I lost anything.
